City of Chicago Public Safety Meeting and Protest Activity from April 13–22, 2021

The City of Chicago hosted a public safety meeting on Monday, April 12th, to discuss the Chauvin Trial, Toledo bodycam footage, and public safety issues. Below is a recap of the meeting and the scheduled protest activity from April 13–22. 

Chauvin Trial:

  • The Floyd/Chauvin trial will likely be closing later this week, then going to jury
  • The media release date will possibly be Wednesday or Thursday

Toledo Bodycam Footage:

  • The release of the Toledo/CPD video to the family will occur on Tuesday evening

Police-Involved Shooting Near Minneapolis

  • There is new cause for concern from a police-involved shooting near Minneapolis

Public Safety Update:

  • The CPIC Fusion Center intel indicated attempted looting by professional crews on 04/11
  • CPD monitoring possible looting caravans, interdicted one on 87th near Dan Ryan
  • Extra CPD units are deployed to the Loop as a result
  • Security posture changing as a result in the Loop and commercial corridors
  • The OEMC emphasized internal city communications plus private-sector security
  • City of Chicago public works trucks will be used to control access to commercial corridors
  • No specific intel regarding widespread unrest in Chicago this week
  • The City will continue to assess daily
  • “See Something, Say Something” will be crucial over the coming days
  • The City continues to prioritize access to Loop for essential workers
  • There is no actionable intelligence requiring the need to physically board up assets

We have received information indicating multiple public gatherings and protests scheduled for Tuesday, April 13th through Thursday, April 22nd. Tentative info for the protest activity is listed below:

  • Unknown time at 110 N Carpenter (McDonald’s HQ). The group will gather for their cause “Don’t Be McFooled. Stop Systemic Racism.”

Tuesday, April 13th, 2021

  • 5:00 pm at 201 E Randolph (Millennium Park). The group will gather for their cause “Justice for Daunte Wright.”

Wednesday, April 14th, 2021

  • 11:15 am at 1200 S Lake Shore (Shedd Aquarium) to 100 W Randolph (Thompson Center). The group will gather for their cause “We Want to Work Drive-By Protest for 10,000 Jobs!” (Weekly protest on Wednesdays)
  • 5:00 pm at 230 S Dearborn (Federal Plaza). The group will gather for their cause “Demonstration Calling for Justice for Adam Toledo.”

Thursday, April 15th, 2021

  • 6:00 pm at 201 E Randolph (Millennium Park). The group will gather for their cause “Justice 4 Daunte Wright – Say His Name.”

Friday, April 16th, 2021

  • 9:00 am at 69 W Washington (Cook County Building). The group will gather for their cause “Demand Kim Foxx Reopen Michael Wesley Case Murdered by Chicago Police Department in 2013.”
  • 5:00 pm at 230 S Dearborn (Federal Plaza). The group will gather for their cause “End Student Loan Debt Protest.”

Saturday, April 17th, 2021

  • 12:00 pm at 401 N Wabash (Trump Tower). The group will gather for their cause “Chicago Trump Flag Wave/Rally and March.”

Wednesday, April 21st, 2021

  • 9:00 am at 100 W Randolph (Thompson Center). The group will gather for their cause “Pass the People’s Ordinance!”

Thursday, April 22nd, 2021

  • Approximate date of Floyd/Chauvin verdict announcement; expect short-notice events (including “Verdict Action: Chauvin Murder Trial” expected in Federal Plaza).

Safety Tips:

  • If you see something suspicious, report it
  • Carry water and stay hydrated
  • Choose a landmark to meet at in case you are separated from your group
  • Utilize the buddy system
  • Remain alert and be observant of surroundings
  • Leave any valuables at home
  • Do not jump any barricades
  • Secure handbags and wallets
  • Stay calm and pleasant
  • Follow your own instincts
  • Leave yourself room to move quickly
  • If you see an unattended bag, alert police as quickly as possible
